Cilento Towns

The major regional town in the upper reaches of Cilento is Agropoli with its major shopping area, ancient castle, "Centro Storico", harbour and sandy beaches and railway station.

Moving south, the Castellabate commune with the fortress town overlooking Santa Maria and San Marco. These are emerging as small holiday towns with golden beaches, shops and restaurants.

Moving south still further, Ogliastro, Acciaroli, Pisciotta, Palinuro, Camerota and the separate town of Marina di Camerota are all worth visiting. Most of the older settlements are sited on hills overlooking the coast-pirates used to be the main problem.

Other towns of note are Scario and the southern regional capital of Sapri. We do not have a car with us these days preferring local public transport. The train journey through the National Park from Agropoli to Sapri (1 hour) is a good excursion with wonderful views and is very cheap.
