The region has an abundance of historical sites and is blessed with superlative scenery, flora and fauna. Local regional specialties include mozzarella cheese, caciocavallo cheese and fish cooked "acqua pazza".
Close by (15 minutes by train from Agropoli and 35 minutes by public bus from Santa Maria) is Paestum
— a Greco Roman city now a major archaeological site with museum. You
can walk through the old ruins and see how the city used to look before
the river estuary silted up.
The
coastline south to Palinuro is spectacular when viewed from the sea.
The highlight is the Grotta Azzurra, formed by the sulphurous mineral
springs giving the water its brilliant colour.
Other
centres include Ancient Elea/Velia famous for its Greek philosophers
(most famous is Zeno) and Padula with its renowned and imposing
monastery.
Tours available in small groups (4-8): Mozzarella farm and vineries; genuine "ghost towns", caves and grottos.
Hotels,
apartments and B&Bs are typically small and family run. We have
chosen a small range set in the Castellabate Community. They vary from
c16th to brand new. We have stated the "Best time" for non Italians to
stay in every case.
